Is home health care right for you?
Here are some frequently asked questions and concerns shared by our family of patients...
Many patients like to come to the doctor's office to get medicine. The reason may be because they know they will be well cared for. However, it might be a long drive or hard for you to take the time away from work. Other people simply may have plans that cannot be changed... What can be done?

Home care might be right for you. Here are questions and answers that might help you make a decision.
Q. What is home health care and how does it work?
A. Home health care can do many of the same things at home that can be done at the doctor's office. Instead of traveling to the hospital or doctor's office, a skilled nurse will come to your home. The nurse visits are ordered by your doctor and managed by a home health care company.
Q. What home care company will I work with?
A. Your doctor decides if you need home care. He will give you names of some companies able to care for you. You will choose the company you want. The doctor will contact the home care company you choose.
Q. How often will I need home care?
A. Your doctor will let you know. The doctor will give the home health care company orders for your care. Your visits could be daily, weekly, monthly or even every 3 months.
Q. Who will I make appointments with?
A. The home care company will contact you. The home care nurses will schedule visits that your doctor orders at the time you request.
Q. Will home health care be as good as what I get from my doctor? How will the doctor know how I'm doing?
A. Yes. The home care nurse who is trained in the care you need, will see you at home. Your doctor will get a report from the home care nurse after each visit. The home care nurse will call your doctor right away for any emergency needs. After every visit, your doctor will know exactly how you're doing.
Q. Does home care cost more than doctor visits?
A. The cost for care at home usually does not cost any more than a visit to your doctor. The exact amount covered depends on your insurance. You will be informed of all costs before a nurse comes to visit.
Q. What if there is an emergency between visits? What if something comes up we're not prepared for?
A. Most doctors are on call 24 hours a day. So are most home health care companies and nurses! You should call your doctor first. Your doctor may order the home care nurse to make changes in your medication. If so, your nurse will work with you to set up a visit.
Q. Can home visits work around my family's schedule?
A. Yes. Home health care nurses will make visits that work for you.
